Flawless Photonics is a leading innovator in the field of photonics, pioneering next-generation advancements in optical fibers, lasers, and sensing technologies. Leveraging proprietary techniques in automation, miniaturization, and material science, the company is redefining the possibilities of photonic manufacturing both on Earth and in space. At the core of Flawless Photonics’ mission is its breakthrough glass processing systems, engineered specifically for microgravity conditions. These systems enable the production of ultra-high-performance optical fibers—free from the light-scattering defects typically introduced by gravity during the manufacturing process.
Our Melt and Form in Microgravity (MFM) service -initially on the ISS- allows to process (melt, form, draw) specialty glasses, particularly glasses with a higher tendency to crystallize in gravity. This high temperature processing of special materials in microgravity with dedicated automated systems has also the potential to serve applications beyond glasses and optical fibers.
Our first mission focused on drawing a special glass fiber, ZBLAN, onboard the International Space Station. We were the first to draw fiber from commercial preforms and at commercially viable lengths. With more than 11km of optical fiber, we set the record of manufacturing optical fiber in microgravity.
