ESRIC – the European Space Resources Innovation overview

ESRIC is the first research, business and innovation centre wholly focused on the utilisation of space resources and the collaboration with leading players in the space resources ecosystem from around the world.

While research will cover the full value chain, it initially focuses on advancing knowledge and technologies for extracting oxygen from lunar regolith. Of particular interest are activities in the area of manufacturing, an important enabler for long term exploration, but also in terms of expanding the commercial sector with in space manufacturing.

ESRIC supports commercial initiatives and start-ups, enabling technology transfer between space and non-space industries.

Spin-off technologies used on Earth can help to fund the development of in-space activities and attract investment from new sources into the space resources eco-system. By being at the centre of the European space resources eco-system, ESRIC draws together excellence from public research and its facilities with private sector initiative and efficiency. Though ESRIC is dedicated to the field of space resources, its mission-driven approach considers terrestrial as well as in-space applications.

At its core, ESRIC provides access to unique research facilities and expertise, enabling ground-based R&D around prospecting, extracting, processing, storing, supplying and using space resources. ESRIC is implemented as a new department of the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology in Belvaux, Luxembourg, giving it access to first class laboratory facilities from day one.
